Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for the EMERGE™?

The EMERGE™ works on many skin types, including very light and very dark skin. The EMERGE™ can knock out the deepest wrinkles, improve the most challenging scars and help to correct a wide variety of other skin imperfections. All skins can benefit from having an Emerge treatment and for having an annual treatment to maintain results. Your Therapist will discuss the full EMERGE™ treatment options with you when you book in for your consultation.

How does it work?

EMERGE™ Fractional Laser comes from the company that invented and patented micro-fractional laser technology. EMERGE™ from Palomar drives thousands of individual columns of light (about the width of a hair) deep into the epidermis and down into the dermis layer of the skin, leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected, healthy and able to stimulate collagen – the basic building blocks or structural support of our skin. The microscopic columns of treated skin are eliminated slowly over many weeks as they are replaced by healthy new tissue. The body's natural healing process then rebuilds the treated tissue with healthy tissue containing new collagen and elastin, which are the building blocks of youthful-looking skin.

How long does treatment take?

Your first EMERGE™ treatment takes approximately 30 minutes and includes the Consultation, Skin Analysis and before digital image photos. Depending on the skin condition being treated, your therapist may recommend a single treatment session or a series of progressive treatments for the best results. Usually clients will gain the best outcomes by receiving 1-4 sessions, 2 - 4 weeks apart. Each following session is aprox. 40 minutes (after your pictures), depending on the size of the area treated.
In some cases you will be able to have the treatment immediately after your initial consultation - this will be determined by your therapist and is only possible if there are no conditions or other factor present that make it advisable for us not to perform the treatment straight away.

What happens during the procedure?

Your therapist will map out the area to be treated and then maneuver the treatment head over the entire area in a pattern delivering the precise amount of energy and coverage for your specific concern. Cooling on the skin may sometimes be used if necessary. Two passes will be made over the entire area with up to a further four passes on target areas of concern.

Which areas can be treated?

You can have almost anywhere on the face or body treated, particularly areas with stretch marks, scarring, pigmentation and skin irregularities. Fine lines around the eyes, age spots/sunspots, and uneven skin tone all also react extremely well from an Emerge treatment. It has also been proven to assist with open pores and acne scarring.

Does it hurt?

Most people feel minimal discomfort like with any form of skin rejuvenation during and after treatment, the majority of our clients easily tolerate the treatment without any numbing agents. Occasionally your therapist will recommend a numbing agent applied aprox. 45 minutes prior to your treatment to assist with reducing any discomfort during treatment. In some salons you may have the Zimmer (Cool Air Machine) used at the same time to reduce discomfort also. Your comfort is our priority; so if at any time you feel discomfort from the treatment, please let your therapist know.

What can I expect after treatment?

You can expect to experience a temporary redness, warmth and minor swelling at the treatment site, which typically lasts aprox. 24 hours - however the area may appear slightly reddened for a maximum of a few days.  After the treatment, a gentle post laser cooling gel and sunscreen is applied. Mineral Make up will also be applied to cover the temporary redness if requested. Your therapist will recommend Cosmeceutical homecare post treatment to assist in healing, and will discuss the potential side effects and your post-treatment expectations with you.

How quickly will I recover?

Following some EMERGE™ treatments your skin will become red, much like sunburn, this can also be accompanied by some mild swelling in the case of deeper treatments. You may experience a sensation of heat for a few hours after treatment; applying cold compresses to your skin will help relieve this. The redness can last 1-3 days. Swelling usually subsides within hours or a day. Within the first week your skin will start to shed the old cells, which will flake and become rough as they work their way out from the skin.  Although on some occasions more aggressive procedures may require several days of healing. Cosmeceutical homecare is recommended post treatment to assist in keeping the skin hydrated and calm. Ask your Therapist about what you can expect from your treatment and your particular concerns

What should I do after my Treatment?

We suggest calming skin care preparations (Multi B 3 and Vitamin E, SPF30 every day) after treatment and whilst skin is healing. Avoid heat, saunas, hot baths and showers or exercising on the day of your treatment. A follow up visit to the salon in 2 weeks is booked in before you leave for post photos and assessment and stringent sun protection is vital.

What are the risks and side effects?

There are minimal side effects but like any other laser treatments you should make sure you follow the post care instructions given to you to minimise any chance of side effects. Pigmentation and dark spots often become darker initially after treatment diminishing over the following week as the old skin cells shed and healthy new cells replace them. It is vital that good sun protection (Reflective SPF 30) is used everyday. Hormonal changes and contraceptives are often a cause of melasma and hyperpigmentation which, if continued, will continue to be a problem and results may not be achieved or maintained. Melasma and hyperpigmentation are conditions which may require regular treatments to have long term results.
